Fill Limits

Recovery Cylinder Fill Levels for R-22

Recovery cylinders containing used R-22 should be filled to the levels indicated in the table below. The table shows the lbs. of refrigerant. The weight of the cylinder should be added to the refrigerant weight to get total gross weight.

Minimum Lbs. of Refrigerant for Free Shipping Maximum Lbs. of Refrigerant* Weight of Typical Cylinder Maximum Combined Gross Weight Refrigerant & Cylinder
Half Ton 900 1000 350 1350
240 lb. 200 240 80 320

*Note: This fill level is actually LESS than the legal amount allowed by the Department of Transportation (DOT). DOT regulates the shipment of cylinders and how full they can be for shipment. The DOT limit is the legal limit. (See 49 CFR 173.304a for full DOT rule)

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not regulate the filling of recovery cylinders. The Air conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) has issued a Guideline K-2004 that recommends fill levels for recovery cylinders. The minimum fill level listed above is LESS than the amount recommended in ARI Guideline K. The ARI Guideline K-2004 is only a guideline. The legal limit is determined by DOT.

Pure Chem Separation will provide full copies of the DOT regulations and ARI Guideline K upon request.

Freight will only be paid on returned cylinders containing the “Minimum Lbs of Refrigerant for Free Shipping” listed above.
